NCC LEVEL 7: Pre-Master's in IT (Postgraduate)

    IT Department

    Module Code:

    Pre-Master's in IT

The Pre-Master's in IT is designed to enable you to quickly bridge the gap between your existing qualifications and a Master's qualification. You will upgrade your English language ability to a level suitable for Master's entrance, while also being introduced to studying IT subjects through the medium of English.

    Entry Requirements

If you hold a non-honours degree or Chinese Da Zhuan (or equivalent, in a relevant IT field) you can enter the Pre-Master's in Information Technology directly. If you hold a full honours degree you can take a shorter version of the qualification. To find out more about this shorter version please contact your Accredited Partner Centre.
If you are a potential student whose first language is not English, you will need to obtain a valid score of 5.0 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination or equivalent. If you hold a higher IELTS score you may also be eligible for exemptions from certain units, meaning you can complete the qualification more quickly. Alternatively, take the free NCC Education standard English Placement Test which is administered by our Accredited Partner Centres.

The Pre-Master's in IT is a one year full-time qualification, which can also be studied part-time over two or three years. The qualification is structured into three terms, taught over a total of 32 teaching weeks, with additional time available at the end of each term for assessment. You must pass each of the following units in order to be awarded with a Pre-Master's in IT certificate.

    • English Language Level 4 - this Upper Intermediate unit aims to develop you into a fully independent user of English, through systematically improving your ability across the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as ensuring familiarity with, and accurate use of, a broad range of grammar and vocabulary items. You will engage with both factual and abstract texts and produce writing suitable for both personal and business communication.
    • English Language Level 5 - this advanced level unit creates an opportunity for non-native speakers of English to perform on an equal level to native speakers in both academic and professional environments. Upon completion of this unit, you will have obtained a level of English suitable for Master's level study and be able to function in professional environments.
    • English for Academic Purposes 1 and 2 - complements the English language units; these two units introduce you to the specialist language skills required to deploy improved linguistic competency in academic situations. The focus is firmly on skills development, to enable you to effectively implement strategies to understand academic input and produce strong written work of the type required for success at postgraduate level.
    • Developing Study Skills for Postgraduate Learning - focuses on the practical skills required to learn successfully at postgraduate level. You will be able to transfer these skills to the workplace in your future career. On successful completion of this unit, you will be eligible for an exemption from the 'Study Skills for Postgraduate Learning' unit on the NCC Education Level 7 Diploma in Business Management qualification.
    • Databases - builds upon your general understanding of database systems, ensuring that you gain an in-depth understanding of designing and implementing a complete database application to meet business requirements.
    • Object-Oriented Modelling - develops an appreciation of object-oriented concepts, as an aid to understanding a problem domain and representing a system's requirements. UML is used as the modelling language throughout the Software Engineering process. As OO concepts are now widely in use in both platform applications and on the web, an understanding of this field opens up careers in all aspects of software development.
    • Decision and Management Support Systems - looks at the application of computer-based information systems used in business for the support of management. As the corporate decision making process is extremely complex, many of the businesses look for ways of controlling, monitoring and streamlining the process through the use of IT, making management support systems an important tool in the enterprise domain, and therefore an indispensible complement to the skill-set of all computing graduates.
    • Optional Module: Introduction to IELTS - prepares you for assessment by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This unit does not carry any credits towards the qualification and is not assessed by NCC Education.

This qualification is assessed by assignment and examination. Assessment dates are available from your Accredited Partner Centre.

Successful Pre-Master's in IT graduates can progress directly onto the NCC Education Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Business IT (QCF) (L7DSBIT) or NCC Education Level 7 Diploma in Business Management (QCF) (L7DBM). Students may also apply to top-up their qualification with a dissertation to full master's level.
